Proposed OmniRide Bus Service Changes & Enhancements

This document answers common questions about the proposed changes to OmniRide services scheduled for January 31, 2027, and summer 2027. Our goals are to enhance reliability, reduce wait times, and introduce Microtransit options in low-ridership areas.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

Purpose
We regularly evaluate our transit network to use resources effectively. Changes include addressing low-ridership areas, increasing frequency on busy routes to every 30 minutes, and providing faster express options for commuters.

Timeline
If approved, most proposed changes would take effect on January 31, 2027.  The proposed changes to Routes 612 and 613 would take effect in the summer of 2027. Public hearings are scheduled for October 13 and October 15, and the comment window will remain open until 5 PM on October 22, 2026.

LOCAL & MICROTRANSIT CHANGES

Route 51 Changes & New Microtransit Zone

This fixed route is being proposed as an expanded Dumfries Microtransit Zone. This on-demand, curb-to-curb service would cover all 51 bus stops along Route 234 and Waterway. Instead of waiting for a fixed-route bus, you can request a vehicle when you are ready.

Route 94 Changes & New Microtransit Zone
This route is proposed to be shortened to operate only between the Stonebridge Garage and Tackett’s Mill, with a new microtransit zone for areas east of Route 1 along Rippon Blvd.  This service would also better align with VRE train schedules.

Frequency Improvements for Routes 52, 53, and 94
Proposed expansion of peak-hour availability:

  • Route 94: Reduce long 90-minute wait times to 30-minute wait times.
  • Route 52 & 53: 30-minute wait times during peak hours.

Proposed Changes to Routes 52 & 53 (NOVA Campus, Ferlazzo Building, or Sentara Hospital)

  • NOVA Campus & Potomac Center Blvd: Will no longer be served by Route 52 and will be served only by Route 53.
  • Ferlazzo Building: Route 53 will serve Ferlazzo in both directions. Route 52 will serve Ferlazzo Southbound only.
  • Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center: Will now be served by Northbound Route 53 trips. Route 52 will continue to serve Sentara in both directions.

COMMUTER EXPRESS CHANGES

Route 612 Changes
To maximize bus availability and avoid heavy city traffic, Route 612 is proposed to terminate at the Pentagon. If you need to travel into downtown D.C., you can transfer to the Metrorail at the Pentagon or switch to our brand-new direct Express Route 613 – Gainesville to Navy Yard.

New Route Options from Gainesville to D.C.
Proposed the introduction of two new direct options that bypass the Pentagon entirely to get you to work faster:

  • Route 613 (Gainesville to L’Enfant Plaza / Navy Yard): Direct service to South D.C. / Navy Yard.
  • Route 614 (Gainesville to NoMa): Direct service to Union Station / NoMa area via State Department.

New Metro Express Route 69
Proposed Route 69 is a new Metro Express route connecting the Balls Ford Commuter Lot in Manassas directly to the Vienna Metro Station. It will operate 5 morning trips and 5 afternoon/evening trips in both directions, providing seamless access to the Orange Line.

Culpeper and Warrenton Trips

With these proposed changes, your bus will now terminate at the Pentagon instead of continuing into D.C., but you'll get expanded service closer to home. 3 AM and 3 PM trips on the Route 612 Culpeper/Warrenton line will now extend to the Brandy Park & Ride lot in Culpeper. You can also transfer at the University Lot to Route 613 to continue to L’Enfant Plaza and Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.
