Transit Benefits

Transit benefits may be used towards PRTC bus fares.

Metrochek is a tax-free, employer-sponsored benefit.  Metrochek vouchers can be redeemed toward SmarTrip value, which can then be used to pay PRTC bus fares.  Metrochecks are being discontinued in favor of SmartBenefits (see below).  Metrocheks are no longer accepted at PRTC, but may be used to load value onto SmarTrip cards at Passes/Farecards machines at Metrorail stations.

SmartBenefits® is the electronically paid monthly (Metrochek) transit benefit that can be downloaded to SmarTrip cards using the Passes/Farecards machines at Metrorail stations.

When paying in cash No transfers. Must pay separate fares on each bus.

Between PRTC Buses and VRE Trains

  • VRE monthly pass holders -- boarding a PRTC bus at a VRE Station or the bus stop nearest a VRE Station ride FREE.  When riding a PRTC bus to get to a VRE station, the applicable bus fare is required.
  • ALL other VRE pass holders – are required to pay applicable bus fare when traveling to and from VRE stations.

Transferring To Other Bus Systems

Transferring between OmniRide or Metro Direct buses and other regional bus systems is easy with a SmarTrip card.  The electronic farebox will calculate and automatically deduct the correct fare from your SmarTrip card.  Transfers must be made within 3 hours of boarding to receive credit.  No transfer credit is given when transferring between OmniRide or Metro Direct buses and Metrorail.

Passengers paying cash and transferring to or from other regional bus systems WILL NOT receive a transfer discount and must pay the applicable fare for each portion of their trip. In order to receive a transfer discount on those services, riders must pay with SmarTrip cards.
